Photo Friday

Hello again everyone! Are we ready for a three day weekend? Chris’ work has calmed down a bit and he is back to his regular working hours, but it will still be nice to have him home for an extra day.

Last weekend was a busy one for us with Niskaday (photos presumably to be posted in a separate post if I ever get around to it) and then a visit from friends Sat-Sun. We went mini golfing together Sunday then out for a tasty lunch. Lewis was excited to go golfing but once we got there he discovered that the actual golfing part was rather boring and there were much more interesting things like a water fountain to watch, bugs to hunt for under rocks, a play area, and ice cream!

I am nearly 38 weeks pregnant and definitely feeling the effects. I get quite worn out if I am on my feet for any length of time, so we have been doing lots of at-home activities all week and not straying too far away. There is still plenty of fun to keep us busy though!

Shaving cream, apparently, is the most fun if you spread it all over your entire body. (I offered to him to take his shirt off but he didn't want it on his belly or skin, just his clothes.)

Here he is totally engrossed with either Endless Alphabet or Endless Reader. He loves both and has learned a ton about letters and letter sounds from them.

Happy springy Friday everyone! We’ve had a couple days of slightly cooler weather, but no rain yet except a bit in the nights so we’ve still been getting out to play very frequently! Lewis and our neighbor J have been having a lot of fun playing with chalk, squirty bottles of water, and squirt guns (squirting both the chalk and each other.) A few days ago Lewis and I also mixed up a batch of fizzy squirty sidewalk chalk paint. We took it outside to share with J and the two boys had an absolute blast. They first had a lot of fun squirting designs all over the sidewalk (and L all over himself. Thankfully after a quick scrub and a soak there were no stains in his shirt.) They were even more excited when I brought out the bottles of vinegar after the paint had all been squirted! This is definitely an activity we will be repeating in the future.

This weekend will also be a fun and busy one for us. Tomorrow is our little town celebration of Niskaday, which we have had a lot of fun with the past two years. We’ll go to the parade in the morning, and then head out soon after for the fair. Our main goals will be to get some tasty lunch and see the petting zoo. We’ll also explore whether Lewis is interested in trying any of the rides this year, and perhaps have fun watching the clown on stilts since that was one of Lewis’ favorite things last year. I’ll also try to get a peek around the craft booth, possibly while Chris and Lewis are off playing and exploring. Once we are done with Niskaday we are also looking forward to an overnight visit from a couple of friends. Lewis is very excited at the prospect of seeing Daddy and Aaron playing some video games (he’s hoping for Skylanders and Mario) and also is planning to show off some of his toys. 🙂

And here are your photos for the week!

Strawberries, bananas, Vanilla Wafers, and melted chocolate for dipping. This was originally planned as a Mother's Day treat but we were too busy eating other yummy things so Lewis and I enjoyed it together the next day.

We are still very happy about the arrival of spring, and the weather just keeps getting springier and springier! Crocuses and daffodils are blooming, the grass is starting to turn green, people can be seen out walking at every time of the day, the sun is shining and the birds are singing! Lewis is absolutely loving everything about being outside from dirt and mud and sticks to finally having other kids around to play with. We have been spending as much time as possible outside. As usual my housework has suffered as a result, but I always seem to find some reason not to keep up with all that pesky cooking and cleaning. 😉

Happy snowy Friday everyone! Actually, the snow is pretty much melted by now, but Lewis was very excited last night to step outside and see the big fat flakes starting to fall and gather on the grass, and as soon as he was out of bed this morning he was requesting to go out in it. (A good idea actually because it was a sunny day and it melted quite quickly. We went out a little after 8:30 and by 9:30 a good portion of it was already disappearing.)

Fall seems to have sped by us and we are now going head-long into holiday season. Thanksgiving in just a few weeks, the stores full of ridiculously early Christmas stuff, people on Facebook posting about listening to Christmas carols already… I love Christmas,  but I’m trying to block out all the Christmas-y stuff and focus on Thanksgiving for now. I should probably come up with some turkey-themed crafts to do with Lewis now that I think about it.

Anyway, some photo-cuteness! I nice mix of Fall and our first glimpses of Winter.

Family Time

Even though I don’t work a M-F week any more, and I love spending my days with Lewis, I still look forwards to the weekends every week! The weekends are when Chris, Lewis, and I get to hang out as a family, spend the whole day playing together, relaxing, or going on adventures. Some weekends feel busy with traveling places, shopping, or other things. Other weekends are slower paced. They all seem to fly by though.

This past weekend was the best kind of weekend. We spent some time being lazy and relaxing, and also went out to do some things together.

We started off Saturday morning with a big breakfast together. Chris and I both love breakfast foods, but he leans more towards the savory (hash browns, bacon, breakfast burritos, etc.) whereas I lean towards pancakes, waffles, french toast, etc. We ended up with bacon, homemade hash browns, an omelette (for Chris) and whole wheat banana pancakes (for me and Lewis.) Lewis decided that the bacon was the absolute best part of the meal and he didn’t want to eat any of the rest of it.

After breakfast we all walked over to a yard sale I had spotted on Friday, and we ended up getting an awesome Fisher Price block activity table thingy. Lewis loves it!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAHe (and Daddy) spent a good part of the day Saturday playing with it and exploring all the different things it can do, looking at the different things inside the blocks, etc. It came with a ton of extra blocks as well as a giraffe thingy that he can put the blocks in or just carry around. He also keeps going back to play with it yesterday and today. It is perfect for his level right now with fiddly bits to work on his fine motor skills, places to put the blocks in and out, etc.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERASaturday night we took a ball and a frisbee outside in the lawn between apartments to enjoy the beautiful weather. I wasn’t sure how Lewis would react since he is sometimes a bit hesitant about being on the grass, and also with Daddy and I playing frisbee our attention wasn’t as focused on him as usual. He loved it! He was excited to watch us throwing the frisbee, kicking the ball, and running around. He had fun picking clover flowers in the grass and surprised me with doing a lot of walking on the grass. He is usually very timid about walking on grass since it is more of a challenge, but he seemed to gain more and more confidence with it just in the time we were out there.

A lot of our scheduling of time revolves around Lewis’ nap times still, so often we only half-plan things ahead of time but don’t finalize things until we see when he has woken up in the morning, which sets the tone for when he will need to nap. We came up with two ideas for Sunday: either to go blueberry picking and see the animals (goats) at the orchard or to go to Olive Garden for lunch together. We were leaning towards the berry picking but Lewis apparently had other plans. He fell asleep in his stroller while we were out for our morning walk, an hour earlier than I had expected him to nap. Since Olive Garden opens earlier than the orchard it worked out to be perfect timing to go to lunch after he woke up. He was super well behaved at the restaurant, stayed in the high chair the entire time we were eating, and absolutely loved gnawing on bread sticks and dropping pieces of shrimp and olives onto the floor.

After Olive Garden we decided to check out Toys R Us since it was nearby. We didn’t have any real plan of anything to buy, just decided to wander through the store and see what caught our interest. Of course we had to check out the video games and Skylanders display since that is the line of games that Daddy’s company (Vicarious Visions) is doing a lot of work on. Lewis was super excited over a big plush Eruptor, which seems to be one of his favorite Skylanders to play with in Daddy’s collection. He got to play with it a bit in the store but we didn’t think we needed to bring it home. We ended up buying him another puzzle instead, mostly because he saw it on the shelf and kept saying “boooo, boooo” at the cow in the farm scene. (I don’t know how to type up the way he actually pronounces that… it is somewhere between a “b” and a “v” sound, like in the spanish word “vaca” I guess, but it’s been a long time since I took Spanish. He is working hard on his “b” sounds recently so most of his “words” and sounds end up with a “b” mixed in.)

My favorite picture. I asked him for a smile and he gave me this goofy snarl face instead.

My favorite picture. I asked him for a smile and he gave me this goofy snarl face instead.

Sunday afternoon I was tired out and had a nice long nap while Lewis was napping. Chris was a sweetheart and took the opportunity to do some dishes and tidy up the living room, and of course relax with his video games as well.

Once Lewis was in bed for the night we finished watching The Hobbit together and enjoyed some rootbeer floats. Yum! It was a great weekend, which of course means we are all just wishing for more weekend time. The next couple weekends will be busy with travel since next week we are headed up to the family camp again. This time there will be all kinds of extended family there, which will be a different kind of fun!

Sweet Surprises

Chris occasionally tries to surprise me with things, and I invariably end up ruining the surprise before he can complete his plans. Either I catch on that he is up to something, or I ask a question that unwittingly causes him to reveal what he is planning. For Valentine’s day he was thinking of surprising me with take-out from Joe’s Crab Shack but the night before I asked him what I should cook for Valentine’s dinner so he revealed his plan to me. But today he managed to actually surprise me by not telling me that he had the day off!

Lewis and I partially woke at the normal time to the usual activity of Chris showering and getting ready for work. Eventually he came in and kissed us both goodbye and I drifted back to sleep. After a while we woke again and were doing our usual lying in bed making baby-babble sounds at each other. Then I heard a sound out in the kitchen! I looked at my phone and confirmed that Chris should have been long gone to work, so my next thought was that either he was sick and he decided to call in or maybe maintenance was there for some reason, but I didn’t hear them come in and we didn’t need anything fixed anyway. So I got up, brushed my teeth, and peeked out, and sure enough there was Chris in the kitchen making waffles!

He’s been very busy with work recently, trying to get things finished up with a deadline that kept dragging on because new issues kept cropping up, and apparently the thing was finally finished this week and he decided yesterday to take today off. It was great for him to have an extra day off to “relax” (although he was pretty busy all day anyway) and nice for me to have some extra time to get things done. Lewis pretty much runs the show around here, and his edict requires at least one parent to be playing with and/or holding him at all times, which makes it hard to get certain things done during the day. He was in a super happy mood today and seemed completely thrilled to have so much time with Daddy.

We had a lovely relaxing but also productive day together, which included a trip to Target to buy storage bins.

Image

I think we need more games.

Chris got himself a big bin, which he filled with all his xbox games. He counted. There are 98. His big project today was to begin rearranging his games and our movies in the living room. We are planning to move our cookbooks and such from one shelf to another to make space for toys in what will be Lewis’ little “play room” area, and the first step was making space by moving the xbox games. Lewis isn’t fully mobile yet, but it won’t be long so we’ve got to get to work on baby-proofing and getting things ready. For now his toys are in easily accessible baskets, as well as all over the floor, but we are working on getting them more organized for him.
