Photo Friday

Time to play a little catch-up with photos! It’s been about a month, I think, since I’ve posted. We’ve been busy! The first week of August Chris’ parents came to visit, and the following week we went up to my family’s cabin on Lake Champlain, where there is no internet access. This past week has been a bit of a blur trying to settle back into regular routines, catch up with laundry, etc. Chris was expecting things to be a bit calmer at work now but he went back in on Tuesday only to discover that they are still requesting them to work 50 hour weeks, so he has worked two late nights already this week and will probably work on Saturday as well. I’m getting a little better at juggling solo bedtime with two little ones, but it is still a bit tricky since Anya likes to spend most of the evening attached to me and nursing constantly, tanking up for the night.

Our week with Chris’ parents was very nice for all of us. This was the first time they have made it out here to see where we live, where Chris works, and of course to meet Anya! Most of the time was spent with them exploring the area a bit on little day trips with Chris and Lewis (the most successful of which I think was to the Albany Pine Bush) while Anya and I hung out here nursing, napping, and attempting to wash some dishes. We also spent time with everyone hanging out here, playing with chalk and bubbles, swimming in the pool, etc. Lewis loved having visitors and by the end of the week was telling them to stay here and not go home! I don’t have a lot of photos from the visit since most of the photos that were taken were on Chris’ phone, but there are a couple here as well as some from before their visit.

They said goodbye Friday night, and Saturday morning was spent busily cleaning and packing to head up to my family’s camp. It was a lovely visit as well but I guess I will leave the details for a later post since these pictures are all from prior to that! Hopefully I will have some time to hop on the computer again soon and sort through the many photos from our trip.

Hello! Anya is 3 weeks old this week, and it is amazing how quickly time is passing! (I know, talk to anyone with children and they’ll tell you how the early weeks/months/years just fly by and are gone before you know it, but this is definitely feeling much faster than it did with Lewis.) We’re still getting along pretty well with Daddy at work. Depending on how Anya times her naps in relation to her brother’s I don’t always get a nap of my own, but luckily she only wakes about twice each night so I’m not as terribly exhausted as I could be. The house isn’t clean, but it never was anyway. Toys are everywhere and dirty dishes are piled in the kitchen as usual. Give me another five years and maybe I’ll crack the code on keeping up with the housework.

We’ve gotten a little better about managing to get outside too. I’ve used a combination of the Moby wrap, ring sling (still getting used to this), and stroller, or leaving her asleep in her bouncy chair in the living room while Lewis and I play outside the front door. Easiest so far seems to be going for walks with her napping in the stroller and letting Lewis run and play alongside us as we go along. This also has the added benefit of getting me a little exercise, and also makes it easy to keep her shielded from the sun.

Photo Friday

It looks like I’ve been hit full on with pregnancy brain/mom brain today since I completely forgot it was Friday and I needed to do a photo post. Luckily we have a system in place for Chris to text me a reminder, which usually happens just as I’m finishing up the post for the week. Lewis also seems to be cooperating by having a nice long nap so I (hopefully) have time to finish this before he wakes. It’s not surprising since we had a busy morning and he also took a while to fall asleep today. I could hear him being very busy in his bed pretending to be a fork lift, and an excavator, and a dump truck, and I’m sure all sorts of other things too. He is on a construction kick right now because they have been paving in front of our apartments this week and we also took the book Diggers Go out from the library today. (All the books in this series are a lot of fun for toddlers with great pictures and full of fun sound effects. There is a trains one, diggers, planes, and trucks. Lewis enjoys them all.)

We went to the library this morning despite the fact that all I’ve wanted to do all week is sit on the couch. Baby is due Monday, and as I mentioned last week (I think) I am definitely feeling very pregnant now! I get tired if I’m on my feet for much longer than ten minutes, though it actually seems worse when I am just standing in one place (dish washing, prepping dinner, playing outside with Lewis, etc.) than when I’m actually walking and moving. So, I decided we would go to the library since we had a book due next Tues. and also it just seemed like a good idea to get both Lewis and myself out of the house. We had fun and came home with a pile of new books as usual. (Most of which we will read once or twice and then Lewis will declare he doesn’t like them anymore.) After the library we went to Starbucks for a treat despite the fact that it was almost lunch time. Lewis picked his favorite, a cake pop, and I got my decaf coffee frappuccino and we were both happy to sit and relax outside for a little while. Then we came home and had our real lunch which consisted of leftovers for me and a whole heap of peanut butter licked off apple slices for Lewis. I think he may have eaten a few bites of apple too, but mostly he would just live on peanut butter if he could.

Anyway, I know you are all here for the pictures and not my babbling, so here is the cuteness for the week:

Photo Friday

It’s Friday, which means it’s time for more cute Lewis photos! This week has been all about things that Lewis can keep busy with while I sit on my butt near by, which has looked like a lot of playing out in front of our apartment with me observing from my lawn chair. Last weekend also included a lot of outside time, but Chris was home so Lewis got a bit more interaction.

The pool opened last weekend and even though we knew the water would be frigid Chris and Lewis decided to give it a try (while I sat in a comfy chair watching the action.) Lewis was rather cautious at first, but eventually decided he loved the water. He also found it rather fascinating that there were bugs in the water. He wanted to rescue all the live ones, and wanted daddy to swish away the dead ones. I joined them to watch (and take pictures) the first day they went, but when they decided to go again the next day I didn’t tag along. It sounds like they had even more fun that day though since they found some pool noodles to play with and Lewis even attempted some solo swimming while hanging on a noodle! I’ll probably send the two of them out again this weekend if the weather is warm enough, although the idea of a freezing cold swim isn’t quite appealing to me at the moment.

Hello again everyone! Are we ready for a three day weekend? Chris’ work has calmed down a bit and he is back to his regular working hours, but it will still be nice to have him home for an extra day.

Last weekend was a busy one for us with Niskaday (photos presumably to be posted in a separate post if I ever get around to it) and then a visit from friends Sat-Sun. We went mini golfing together Sunday then out for a tasty lunch. Lewis was excited to go golfing but once we got there he discovered that the actual golfing part was rather boring and there were much more interesting things like a water fountain to watch, bugs to hunt for under rocks, a play area, and ice cream!

I am nearly 38 weeks pregnant and definitely feeling the effects. I get quite worn out if I am on my feet for any length of time, so we have been doing lots of at-home activities all week and not straying too far away. There is still plenty of fun to keep us busy though!

Shaving cream, apparently, is the most fun if you spread it all over your entire body. (I offered to him to take his shirt off but he didn't want it on his belly or skin, just his clothes.)

Happy springy Friday everyone! We’ve had a couple days of slightly cooler weather, but no rain yet except a bit in the nights so we’ve still been getting out to play very frequently! Lewis and our neighbor J have been having a lot of fun playing with chalk, squirty bottles of water, and squirt guns (squirting both the chalk and each other.) A few days ago Lewis and I also mixed up a batch of fizzy squirty sidewalk chalk paint. We took it outside to share with J and the two boys had an absolute blast. They first had a lot of fun squirting designs all over the sidewalk (and L all over himself. Thankfully after a quick scrub and a soak there were no stains in his shirt.) They were even more excited when I brought out the bottles of vinegar after the paint had all been squirted! This is definitely an activity we will be repeating in the future.

This weekend will also be a fun and busy one for us. Tomorrow is our little town celebration of Niskaday, which we have had a lot of fun with the past two years. We’ll go to the parade in the morning, and then head out soon after for the fair. Our main goals will be to get some tasty lunch and see the petting zoo. We’ll also explore whether Lewis is interested in trying any of the rides this year, and perhaps have fun watching the clown on stilts since that was one of Lewis’ favorite things last year. I’ll also try to get a peek around the craft booth, possibly while Chris and Lewis are off playing and exploring. Once we are done with Niskaday we are also looking forward to an overnight visit from a couple of friends. Lewis is very excited at the prospect of seeing Daddy and Aaron playing some video games (he’s hoping for Skylanders and Mario) and also is planning to show off some of his toys. 🙂

And here are your photos for the week!

Strawberries, bananas, Vanilla Wafers, and melted chocolate for dipping. This was originally planned as a Mother's Day treat but we were too busy eating other yummy things so Lewis and I enjoyed it together the next day.

Happy Family Day!

Today is Mother’s Day. It also happens to be Chris’ birthday. I’m not overly sentimental about Mother’s Day, and tend to focus more on wanting Chris to have a nice birthday. He isn’t too excited about his birthday, and thinks Mother’s Day is the more important thing to celebrate. It evens out to turn our day into more of a nice “family day.” We do a lot of our normal weekend things, eat a few treats or special foods, and do something nice to enjoy each other’s company as a family.

Lewis has been very excited all week to give Daddy his birthday presents and kept asking if it was Sunday yet, so we gave Chris one early present last night and the rest first thing this morning. A little while later Chris asked me how it feels to shop for a giant kid. I hadn’t even noticed the trend, but all the presents we got him fall into the category of either “toys” or “books geared towards kids.” 🙂 In my world there’s nothing wrong with grownups enjoying toys and games or books of any sort, so it didn’t occur to me that I was buying “kid” things, just things that he would like! Lewis was fascinated by one of the books Daddy got, and demanded he read it to him right away.

Love seeing my two cuties enjoying a book together!

We haven’t really started getting into chapter books with Lewis yet, but he listened happily through the first chapter and seemed to enjoy it. They tried reading chapter two later on, which was a bit longer, and Lewis started getting very wiggly and distracted about half way through. I guess we’ll keep sticking to the picture books for now and maybe try some easier “chapter” books before diving into this one with him!

We enjoyed a tasty breakfast of waffles with strawberries and whipped cream and then headed off for a hike at Lisha Kill Nature Preserve.

Lewis was very curious about the sign at the entrance.

Even though Chris and I first connected through hiking and used to enjoy a lot of hikes together, we haven’t done very many since Lewis joined our family. We’ve done a few here and there, but overall this was a new-ish experience for him and one he was very excited about!

One of his favorite things right from the start of the hike was all the sticks he could pick up.

His first favorite stick was this nice tall one which he told me was a staff which helped him walk on tricky places. He quickly abandoned it though when he found a more interesting one.

He started saying he was hungry as we left the house, and continued saying it as we got started on our hike. I had granola bars in the car but not along in the woods with us, so when we found a bench just a little way into the hike Lewis and I sat down and sent Daddy back to the car to get a snack for us. It seemed like a good opportunity to get a selfie with my little guy while we waited.

Chris and I have hiked this trail a few times before so we knew there was a nice little stream we would find, but it was very exciting and new for Lewis! We found a frog, tiny fishes, lots of rocks to toss in, and a little bridge to cross. There were also other families with kids playing and tossing rocks both on the way in and out of the woods. I enjoyed seeing so many other families out also enjoying nature today, rather than getting into the busyness and commercialization of Mother’s Day.

IMG_9969

Overall we didn’t really go very “far” on the hike, just a ways into the woods and then turned around and came back out, not all the way around the loop. But we had a lovely time and were in the woods for a little longer than an hour, maybe an hour and a half. Lewis did all his own walking even with many steep up and down hills. He had a few slight slips and needed to hold someone’s hand to keep steady on some parts, but he wasn’t deterred by any of it.

IMG_9977

I loved seeing Lewis enjoying the hike so much and definitely look forward to taking him on more hikes in the future. He seemed to really love all the sticks, bugs, logs, water, and everything else. As we were leaving he said he wanted to live in the forest! 🙂

We had a very nice day as a family, and I hope everyone else has enjoyed a nice day today regardless of whether or not you are a mother, or it is your birthday, or whatever else is going on in your life!
