Baby’s First Haircut

Today we took Lewis for his first haircut! His hair is quite light and thin so he probably could easily have gone a bit longer without getting it cut, but it was getting long and shaggy enough (especially at the back) that we decided it was time.

We decided to take him to Snip-Its after asking the advice of other local Mommies. Taking him to a kid-centered hair salon seemed like the best option since we weren’t sure how he’d react and we knew that they would be prepared to deal with a wiggly/sad/whatever reaction toddler.

I took a few “before” photos this morning.

A bit long around the back and sides.

The top/front weren't looking too bad but you can see some shagginess around his ears.

Thickest and messiest at the back of his head.

We headed over to Snip-Its after lunch. When we got there we found out that it would be a half hour wait. We wandered over to the Stride Rite store to look at winter boot options and get his feet measured. Turned out I’ve been putting him in too-small shoes (He’s had them since the summer, so not surprising.) His old shoes were size 5 XW, they measured him at a 5.5 on one foot and a 6 on the other foot. We got him some new sneakers in a 6.5 W. He was happily running around the store before we even got the second shoe on him! They are cute and blue and he seems comfy in them. Didn’t get any snow boots yet since we’re not sure how much he’ll grow between now and the actual arrival of snow, plus I haven’t bought a snowsuit yet so didn’t know what color to get to match.

After getting his new shoes we headed back over to see if it was time for his haircut. We sat around watching the TV and exploring the waiting area a bit. He was perfectly content and didn’t seem phased by the sound of a little boy crying while getting his hair cut. He stuck close with Daddy and was pretty quiet, which is normal for him around strange people and new places.

This is how he looked almost the whole cut. Zoned out (or in shock/shut down) staring at the TV they had for distraction.

Once they called us back we showed him how he would get to sit in a special chair and how the lady would use the comb and scissors on his hair. We’d been talking it up to him all morning, and he let us buckle him into the chair without a fuss. He was so calm and quiet for (almost) the whole haircut. The girl doing his hair said it was one of the best/calmest first hair cuts she’s ever seen. Still, enough was enough and when she was almost finished he decided he was ready for Mommy to pick him up again.

Started getting upset just as she finished up the last few snips.

We checked out and he got to have a little toy car for a prize. Time to head home for a nap!

Mama tried to get a photo of the new cut on the car ride home.

Such a big boy! No more shaggy hair on his neck!

His hair doesn’t look super different, but the shagginess is gone. She left it a bit long all around and especially on top since it is still so thin, but it is nicely trimmed up now.

I can’t believe how good he did with it. So proud of my stoic little boy!
