This past weekend we went to Vermont for a lovely four days (Fri – Mon) spent with my family. We celebrated Easter as well as my Dad’s birthday, which was Monday. My whole family was there, which is rare since there are 6 siblings in the family and it can be hard to get all our schedules lined up for time off at the same time. With all of us plus significant others, Lewis, and our parents there were 12 people in the house! Thankfully it is a large house, but it was a very busy/crowded weekend and a little stressful for some (Lewis included.) I don’t seem to get overwhelmed surrounded by all that family, maybe because I am a middle child and have always had family around.
It was lovely to spend time sitting around relaxing, sharing stories, looking at old photo albums, and playing games. Chris and I had been hoping Lewis would spend some time playing with his aunties, uncles, and grandparents and give us a bit of a break, but we are in the midst of some very big separation anxiety and Lewis wanted nothing to do with anyone but Mommy and Daddy. He had fun exploring the house, seeing and playing with new things, but he needed Mommy or Daddy with him (usually holding him) to feel secure. It was definitely a very busy and overstimulating weekend for him with so many ‘new’ people and things. I had been worried about how he would sleep in a weird place and in the pack ‘n play instead of his crib, but he was so tired that he slept well for both naps and bedtimes all weekend.
We arrived in VT Friday and at that point there were just my parents and two of my sisters there, so we were able to settle in without it being too overwhelming for Lewis. Saturday morning I had a fun thrift store excursion with my mom and youngest sister while Lewis stayed at the house napping with Daddy there for when he woke up. Saturday afternoon we went for a nice walk with Lewis in the Moby wrap, and later the rest of the family arrived. Saturday and Sunday we spent a lot of time sitting around chatting and knitting, reading books, etc and playing some games. Sunday was Easter and things got even busier with my grandma and uncle joining us for a yummy turkey dinner.
We had another nice walk Sunday afternoon and this time I left Lewis at the house napping again. I’m almost never away from him, so it was a little weird but nice to get a chance to spend some time with my sisters knowing that he was in good hands with Daddy. Monday was a busy day with everyone leaving. One of my best friends came by after most of the siblings were gone, and Lewis had some play time with baby Amelia who is only a couple weeks older. Too bad he was still feeling pretty overwhelmed from the busy weekend and wasn’t in much of a mood for visiting.
It was a great weekend but it is also nice to be back home now and back to our regular routines. Lewis definitely seems happy to be back and has been in a good mood since we got here and also much more willing to sit on the floor and play without needing Mommy and Daddy attached to him. Today we went to the library again. There were only 6 babies at Baby Lap time today (compared to the 15 that had come last week.) We were able to stay and play a little longer this time before Lewis got tired and needed a nap, although we were still the first to leave. Lewis wasn’t nervous at all near the other babies and mommies (but of course no one was trying to pick him up or anything) and I enjoyed getting to chat a little more with the mommies who were there.
